On 17th April, 1915, the 1st Welsh battalion of 84 Brigade, 28th Division left Poperinghe and marched to trenches at Zonnebeke in the northern part of the Ypres salient where they remained until relieved during the night of 23rd-24th April. During their time here the enemy were gearing up for a major offensive in this sector and the trenches held by the battalion came under considerable fire especially from large trench mortars, minenwerfers or ‘minnies’ as they were known. Stanley Higgs died from wounds on 21st April but the exact date on which he was wounded is not known.
